Dan Cleary Assigned to Grand Rapids

 10/09/2015 - 07:55

The Red Wings announced that Dan Cleary, who cleared waivers, was assigned to Grand Rapids. Cleary, a veteran of 938 NHL games, was assigned to the AHL affiliate along with prospect Xavier Ouellet -- probably the bigger surprise -- as Jakub Kindl and Alexey Marchenko were removed from in the injured list.

Cleary was signed to a one-year, $950,000 contract in the offseason. His demotion won't hurt the Red Wings' cap situation. Even with Pavel Datsyuk out, the Wings are near the cap ceiling, about $1 million under.

Perhaps the demise in the announcement is the demotion of Ouellet. The 22-year-old was injured to start the pre-season but strong once he was able to play. The Wings are going to have decisions to make when Dekeyser returns from injury -- although the easy move would be to demote Marchenko. But as it stands today, the GR blueline is crowded. Besides Ouellet, Ryan Sproul and Nick Jensen, the Griffin defense features prospects Robbie Russo and Richard Nedomlel, and veterans Nathan Paetsch, Brian Lashoff, Scott Czarnowczan and Matt Corrente (former first round pick of the Devils).
